Korean private medical insurance
This guide is for outpatient claims under Korean private indemnity insurance. Start with the covered and non-covered columns on your clinic receipt.
How to read your receipt
For National Health Insurance (NHI) services, look at the patient share, excluding the amount paid by the public insurer. Standardised Korean indemnity policies may reimburse the patient share of covered Korean medicine treatment and generally exclude non-covered Korean medicine charges. Your policy and outpatient deductible determine the payment.
By treatment
| Treatment | What to check |
|---|---|
| Acupuncture, moxibustion and cupping | If billed as NHI-covered, the insurer reviews the patient share. |
| Chuna manual therapy | Check whether this session was covered. Non-covered sessions, including those outside the NHI allowance, are generally excluded. |
| Herbal decoctions under the NHI pilot | If the condition and prescription meet the pilot requirements and the receipt shows NHI coverage, ask about the patient share. |
| Pharmacopuncture, standard herbal prescriptions and deer-antler tonics | When billed as non-covered Korean medicine, these are generally excluded under standardised plans. Check older contracts and separate riders. |
Preparing a claim
At reception
Ask for the itemised medical receipt issued by the clinic. A card slip does not identify NHI classifications.
Before ordering certificates
Ask your insurer whether it needs a detailed bill or a prescription or visit certificate showing the diagnosis code. Required documents depend on the policy and claim amount.
Submitting
Use your insurer’s app or contact centre. Electronic transfer through Silson24 is possible if the clinic and visit appear in the service.
Common questions
What if I received two treatments on one visit?
Covered acupuncture and non-covered pharmacopuncture are assessed separately, even if you paid once.
Why could the payment be zero?
If your eligible patient share is at or below the outpatient deductible, there may be no reimbursement.
Does this apply to older policies?
Contracts predating standardisation in October 2009 and separate riders can have different outpatient and injury terms. Give your insurer the treatment name and billing category.
